New York Islanders Perfect Road Game Against Avalanche (Highlights)

The New York Islanders player a perfect road game against one of the better teams in the NHL with a 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

After beating the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in the shootout, the New York Islanders went on the road for a four game West coast swing. First up, the red-hot Colorado Avalanche.

The Avalanche are 18-9-3 with a +19 goal differential. They also feature the best line in hockey at the moment with Mikko Rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog.

Through 33 games the trio have combined for a ridiculous 148 points. Keeping them quite would be one of the Islanders top priorities. The other; keeping shifts short while playing Colorado’s higher altitude.

First Period

For the first half of the period there wasn’t much going. Both teams seemed to just try and figure each other out.

Neither wanted to make a mistake, but the New York Islanders were the first to get on the board thanks to Jordan Eberle.

Boy did Eberle need that goal. Eberle hadn’t scored a point since December first or scored a goal since November 23rd. It’s been a while. Hopefully, that’s a sign of things to come for Eberle.

Second Period

The New York Islanders finally scored a power play goal against the Detroit Red Wings. The hope was that the Isles PP floodgates were now open.

Two minutes into the second frame and Johnny Boychuk made us all believe with an absolute bullet from the Ovechkin spot.

The Avalanche would add a power play goal of their own four minutes later though. With the way Landeskog and co. have been playing they were bound to find a way on the score sheet.

And after a number of questionable calls by the officials, the Islanders were on the board again with

another

It was the first time since November 15th that he Islanders scored two power play goals in a single game.

Period Three

The third period saw the Islanders hold a two goal lead. In years past that lead wouldn’t have been enough for Isles fans to feel their team could get the win.

You knew a soft late goal was going in at some point. But under Barry Trotz the Islanders were able to effectively manage the game out.

With only minutes left Valtteri Filppula would add an empty netter to make it a 4-1 win for the Islanders.

That’s back-to-back wins for the New York Islanders who are back in a playoff position. In terms of a road game you couldn’t ask for a better performance from the Isles.

1. Johnny Boychuk: 1 Goal, 2 goals prevented

I know “goals prevented” isn’t a stat, but on two occasions Johnny Boychuk was responsible for breaking up a sure goal scoring opportunity. Here’s the first and the second.

Boychuk also added a power play goal.

2. Anders Lee: 1 Goal, 1 Assist

The captain did exactly what you expect him to do. He set up teammates and scored on the power play.

3. Thomas Greiss: 0.968SV%, 30 saves

Greiss was as solid as can be. The only goal scored against him was on the power play. After a little blip in his form he’s back to his 2018-19 self again.
