With last night’s win, the New York Islanders are just one point out of first place. Tonight’s game could be for first place in the Metro.

Before the season started, nearly everyone was writing of the New York Islanders. Deadspin even attempted to mock the Islanders before the season started. Well, they are currently sitting in third place in the Metropolitan Division with a huge game tonight.

After a win last night, the Isles have a quick turnaround to head to D.C. to take on the Capitals. This game means a lot for a ton of reasons.

First, from an emotional standpoint, Barry Trotz is returning to D.C. for the first time since leaving. He was the coach for four years and they finally won a Stanley Cup last year after many second round collapses in the Alex Ovechkin era.

For Trotz, this game means a ton so you can expect the Isles to be up for it. The game also means a lot in the standings. The Isles are one point behind the Capitals in the division for second place. If the Isles win tonight they can surpass the Caps and even have a shot for first.

Columbus, who is on a four-game win streak, holds first place with 59 points. If the Isles win tonight, and the Blue Jackets lose to Montreal the Isles will have lone possession of first place. If that’s not the best story in the NHL this year, I don’t know what is.

Buckle up, tonight’s the biggest game the Islanders have played so far this year. It’s sure to be a good one.
