New York Islanders coach, Barry Trotz and captain Anders Lee were spotted talking shop at a Starbucks in Garden City.

Most of the New York Islanders players and coaches live in the Garden City and Manhasset area so to spot somebody out in that area isn’t all too surprising. Today, both Barry Trotz and Anders Lee were pictured having a conversation outside of a Starbucks.

The photo comes courtesy of Reddit, so shoutout to the old internet doing the thing once again. The topic of conversation that came from this photo in the comments was “Are they talking contracts?”

It’s easy to jump to that conclusion when Brock Nelson just signed and with Anders Lee in need of a new contract. The thought process initially goes to, Anders Lee getting his contract.

I’m sorry to burst everyone’s bubble but I highly doubt the point of this meetup was to negotiate his contract. Let’s break this down.

When is a coach ever the one making the negotiations from the team’s point of view? The General Manager has to be present one would think, in order for a serious discussion on the terms of a contract.

Also, wouldn’t you think Lee’s agent would be around negotiating for his client? Yes, it’s cool that the two are pictured together talking on Long Island, and you know what, it’s probably a pretty good sign but this seems like a common thing from a coach and his captain.

A coach is always usually pretty close with his players, but his captain is his go-to guy, essentially his bridge to the other players. A more likely scenario is Lee and Trotz discussing the season as a whole, and the direction the team is looking to go in the future.

Heck, maybe this is a strictly no hockey talk. Just a couple of guys hanging out drinking coffee, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Next. Brock Nelson gets a NTC

A deal with Anders Lee will likely be done before July 1, I just don’t think today was the day that negotiations were happening in a Starbucks in Garden City.
