Looking at the list of names for the 2019 edition of the New York Islanders rookie camp, there are few players that we haven’t heard of before. Who are they?

We’re one step closer to New York Islanders hockey. The team’s rookie camp has officially opened and 30 rookies have been named to the roster.

In total 17 forwards, ten defensemen, and three goalies have been named to the roster. There aren’t a ton of surprises on the 20 man list. The usual names are all there.

Amongst the forward Oliver Wahlstrom, Kieffer Bellows, Otto Koivula, and recent 2019 first-round selection Simon Holmstrom have all been named. On the blue line, Noah Dobson and

Sebastian Aho

will both suit up. And between the pipes, Linus Soderstrom and Jakub Skarek will both be attending.

Non-Household Names

The players we haven’t heard of before is what’s interesting when it comes to the rookie roster announcement. So here are some players who aren’t already associated with the Islanders in some way (either playing for Bridgeport or the Worcester Railers of the ECHL) that you may not have heard of and a little bit about them.

Forward

Erik Brown – He served as co-captain for the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers of the NCAA. The winger scored 29 points with 18 goals. His career-high is 42 points just two seasons ago.

Kyle MacLean – This 20-year-old center scored 60 points for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL. He added another 13 points in 15 playoff games as the Generals made it to the third round.

Brett Neumann – Neumann played with Kyle MacLean on the Oshawa Generals for 29 games after being traded from the Kingston Frontenacs, scoring 20 goals and 31 points. Between the two teams, he accumulated 79 points in 68 games.

He might be someone to watch at camp.

The Generals sent the Frontenacs Nick Wong, a second-round pick, a third-round pick, and a conditional second-round pick for Neumann’s services.

Defense

Justin Murray – Murray, just like Neumann, was traded during the season. The Barrie Colts captain (surprise he was a former captain) was traded to the Saginaw Spirit for Ryan Stepien and a fifth-round pick.

Saginaw Spirit GM Dave Drinkill had the following to say about Murray after trading for the defenseman:

"“As an organization we are very excited to add a player of Justin’s character and ability to the Spirit organization,” said Drinkill. “We feel that he can provide offense from the back-end while providing us very strong defensive play and grit as well. Two-way defensemen in this league with experience and leadership are hard to find, so we are excited to be adding him to our group.”"

Experience, leadership, grit, two-way defenseman. Sounds like a Lou type of guy.

The New York Islanders rookie camp might not have all of the drama that the full training camp will have. But its the first look at the quality that the Islanders have in the system, and to see the type of players the New York Islander are looking at.

The Islanders rookies are in action against the Philadelphia Flyers rookies on Wednesday, September 11th in Lehigh Valley.
