Thomas Greiss is a pending UFA at the end of the season. The Islanders netminder doesn’t have much interest in talking contracts right now.
Since the start of the 2018-2019 season, Thomas Greiss has been the best 5v5 goalie in the league. His .941 save percentage is the best in the league over that span and so far in 2019-2020 his numbers are jumping off the page for the second year in a row.
In nine starts, he is 8-1 with a .938 save percentage and a 1.98 goals against average. His numbers are video game-like, after an impressive 2018-2019 campaign paired with Robin Lehner.
Naturally, since Greiss is a UFA at the end of the year, the questions began to rise when it came to contracts. Greiss did a pretty good job of deflecting these questions, just like what he does in net for the Islanders.
Greiss played dumb and jokingly asked, “I’m in a contract year?” he followed that up with talking about the rest of the team and their success:
"“It’s early in the season,” he said. “Those numbers can go up or down real quick at this point, so you can’t put too much weight into that. I think I’ve been playing well and Varly has been playing great hockey, too. As a team, we’re playing good hockey and the most important thing is the success of our team. Everybody is chipping in.”"
It looks like Greiss is going to have to wait until the end of the year for contract talk. In all likelihood he will hit the free agency market and get paid handsomely elsewhere, it all depends on Ilya Sorokin but the plan appears to be a Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov pair in 2020.
