The New York Islanders fell 2-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes in a shootout that went eight rounds. One goal isn’t going to cut it.

Since the playoff series last season, Carolina has had the New York Islanders number. Today went a little better but it’s still not a good matchup for this team and ultimately, the Islanders fell 2-1 in a shootout. Here’s how we got there.

Early in the first, Andrei Svecnhikov scored his 19th of the season. It was another example of the Islanders failing to clear the zone and their opponent taking advantage of the mistake.

It was a pretty back and forth period, as the Islanders finished with seven shots trailing the Hurricanes by three SOG. In the second, both teams would get power play chances, and again the Islanders would come up short on the man advantage.

In fact, it wasn’t until the final minute of the period when the Isles broke through. The captain, Anders Lee netted his 15th on the season thanks to Casey Cizikas on the helper.

No goals were scored in the third period but it wasn’t without chances. Mathew Barzal had a breakaway chance late in the period and was stonewalled by James Reimer who was spectacular this afternoon.

OT was pretty sloppy for both sides, as the Isles had two shots in the OT period to the Canes three. In the shootout, it would go on eight rounds. A goal from Anthony Beauvillier in the third round kept the Isles alive as the next four rounds would see all saves and misses.

Justin Williams, playing in his first game of the season beat Greiss on the five hole and Anders Lee was promptly shutdown giving the Hurricanes a 2-1 shootout win. Yes, the Isles looked better but I’m over the moral victories.

I don’t want to talk about the number of shots, or scoring chances, or “tight games”, I want to see wins, and in the Isles last 10, they are 3-5-2.
