Scott Mayfield didn’t practice on Friday for the New York Islanders but he returned to skating this afternoon and is expected to play tonight.

While defense is the strength of the New York Islanders, they are a tad on the thin side on the blue line at the moment. Unfortunately, they lost Adam Pelech for the season, who is a top-pair guy, and have definitely seen a regression with his absence.

Yesterday, Scott Mayfield missed practice and the nerves started to pile up. Yes, it was listed as a maintenance day but we’ve seen those turn into bigger deals in the past.

Mayfield has having a career year for the Islanders averaging 19:51 per night and with 13 points (5 goals, 8 assists). He’s turned into a very solid second pair guy with Devon Toews and the Isles couldn’t afford to see him miss time.

Well luckily for the Islanders, he was on the ice skating today and it looks like he’s going to be able to play tonight.

The Islanders start their tough stretch of the schedule and need to be as close to full strength as possible. Tonight, they’re down in Tampa Bay before heading to Washington on Monday to take on the Capitals.

Philadelphia, Nashville, and Vegas round out this week’s schedule as they have five games in seven days. With Mayfield ready to go, it helps keep their lineup the same as they find themselves on a five-game point streak.

The Islanders currently sit as the top Wild Card as they are just one point behind Columbus and three points ahead of Carolina for the second spot. It’s shaping up to be a tight finish down the stretch in the Metropolitan Division.
