In the final four, we saw both favorites advance in the quest to find the best player in New York Islanders franchise history.
I’ve lost track of how many days it’s been without sports. It’s truly been one of the most bizarre times I’ve ever seen and a big part of it has to do with the lack of normalcy in our lives as COVID-19 runs its course.
One of the things that sports fans can agree on is the fun of March Madness, unfortunately, this year we weren’t blessed with the luxury of one of the best sports tournaments of the year. So instead, I’ve made my own.
I’m trying to find out who the best Islander is in franchise history voted on by you, the fans. This is what we look like after the final four vote:
Denis Potvin (1) vs Bob Nystrom (5)
Bob Nystrom is one of the more legendary Islanders in team history. For goodness sake, he scored the biggest goal in the team’s history in Game 6 of the 1980 Stanley Cup Final giving the Islanders their first cup in team history.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough. He bowed out to a worthy opponent, Denis Potvin. Potvin, a hall of farmer, is a one seed for a reason. He played in 1060 games with the Islanders over 15 years and had 1052 points along the way.
A .99 points per game pace over your career is damn impressive, no matter what era you play in. The fact that he did it as a defenseman is almost more impressive. Potvin advances with 72 percent of the vote.
Mike Bossy (2) vs John Tonelli (8)
An eight seed making it all the way to the final four is impressive. He was a fan favorite, who’s number just got retired last month, and he deserves all the credit in the world. In eight years with the Islanders, he had 544 points in 594 career games winning four cups along the way.
Unfortunately, as many NHL goalies know, going up against Mike Bossy is just too hard. Bossy, arguably the most prolific scorer in the sport’s history, advances with a whopping 97.8 percent of the vote.
Championship Matchup
The championship voting will begin tomorrow as the one vs two seeds face off. I’m genuinely curious to see who wins this matchup from the fans as both Mike Bossy or Denis Potvin are fine choices for the honor.

If I had to guess, I’m going to say Mike Bossy takes it home with 62 percent of the vote. Thank you to all who participated and make sure to vote on Twitter tomorrow @EyesonIslesFS
