The newest report circulating around the New York Islanders is they have re-signed 23-year-old defenseman, Parker Wotherspoon to a two-year extension.

It has been an interesting offseason for the New York Islanders, so far. We have yet to see them re-sign any of their major pending restricted free agents and there are rumors floating around that the Islanders will be signing a group of unrestricted free agents including Matt Martin, Andy Greene, and Cory Schneider. In the latest report, it looks like the Islanders have tied up a deal with a young defenseman, who has not made his NHL debut yet.

According to @PuckPedia, the Islanders have re-signed Parker Wotherspoon on a two-year deal. Wotherspoon was drafted in the fourth round of the 2015 draft and is coming off his entry level contract.

PuckPedia said this deal carries a $725,000 AAV per year, but the difference between the NHL contract and AHL contract is huge. Wotherspoon could make $700,000 next year with the Islanders or 100,000 with Bridgeport but will be guaranteed $125,000.

The Surrey, British Colombia native has played in three full seasons with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. In the 2019-2020 season, Wotherspoon had four goals, 23 assists, -13 plus/minus and had 82 penalty minutes in 62 games.

Before joining the Islanders organization, Wotherspoon played junior for the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League. He has also represented Canada at the under-18 level in the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship. During his time in 2014 with Team Canada, Wotherspoon was teammates with current Islanders, Mathew Barzal and Anthony Beauvillier.

There is one interesting note about this contract. Wotherspoon will be eligible for the Seattle expansion draft.
