Islanders: Prospect Jakub Skarek has yet to Win on Loan

Earlier this offseason the Islanders sent goaltender Jakub Skarek on loan to Finland. The young prospect has not had the best string of performances.

One of the smartest moves the New York Islanders front office made this offseason was loaning some of their prospects to European clubs to get some game time before the 2021 season. Most of these players have not seen game time since last March and it is crucial for their development to get live game action.

One player who was sent overseas is

Jakub Skarek

. Skarek who is from the Czech Republic was loaned to Peliitat, who plays in Finland in the Mestis league. Mestis is the second division in the Finnish hockey pyramid. There are many current and former NHL players, top prospects and future draft picks who apply their trade in the second division and it is a tough league to compete in.

Winless

Skarek is not the only Islanders goaltending prospect that currently plays in the Mestis. Henrik Tikkanen, who was the Islanders seventh-round draft pick in 2020, plays for league leaders, IPK.

Unfortunately as of today, Skarek in four games played has an 0-3-1 record with a 4.44 goals-against average and .833 save percentage. These numbers will make any goalie cringe and definitely are in need of improvement.

Skarek is coming into this season after splitting his time in 2019-2020 in the AHL with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and the ECHL with the Worcester Railers. Last season was not the best for the 21-year-old, in thirty games between those teams, he finished with a 6-19-3 record. In 14 ECHL games, Skarek had a 3.73 GAA and a .879 SV%.

It is apparent that the past two years have not been the best for Skarek. The great thing is Skarek is still young and can turn this around. Hopefully, he can win in his next performance and when he comes back to North America he can have a positive contribution to the Islanders organization.
