As we look at the odds for the 2021 Stanley Cup, the New York Islanders find themselves near the middle of the pack and one spot ahead of their rivals.

There is plenty of uncertainty ahead of the upcoming NHL season. The NHL’s plan is to start on January 1, but as of right now that is just a plan and there is no indication of when the season may start. Regardless of all of this, the odds have been released for the upcoming season and the New York Islanders are ranked thirteenth.

This puts the Islanders odds at +2220, which puts them one place ahead of the Rangers, who have +2300 odds. The Colorado Avalanche have the best odds at +774, followed by the Vegas Golden Knights (+800) and the Tampa Bay Lightning (+847).

There are four other Metropolitan Division teams that have higher odds than both the Islanders and Rangers.

  • 6th- Flyers, +1448
  • 7th- Capitals, +1800
  • 9th- Penguins, +1838
  • 11th- Hurricanes, +2000

Some will say that being ranked in the middle of the league and behind four divisional opponents is extremely cruel for a the Isles. The Islanders beat two of these Metro teams en route to an Eastern Conference Finals appearance and were a force to be reckoned with.

One of the reasons the Islanders may have a lower spot is because they still needing to figure out their salary cap issues and get Mathew Barzal and others sign. Once this happens, we could see the Islanders get improved odds for the upcoming campaign.

At the end of the day odds are just nothing more than odds. Once the puck gets dropped, all of these predictions are thrown out of the window and it is any team’s for the taking. These early predictions may be an early indicator of what may happen in 2021, but during the offseason and with the free agency frenzy still in full swing, there is no telling on who will be lifting the cup at the end of the playoffs.
