Technically, as far as we know, Mathew Barzal isn’t under contract (officially) but he is listed on the Islanders training camp roster.
Sound the alarms! According to the Islanders training camp roster that was released to the media today, Mathew Barzal is on the camp roster. The big question becomes, does this mean he signed a contract?
As of this second it doesn’t appear that Barzy has signed, but also that could just mean that the team and Barzal’s camp has agreed to terms that just hasn’t been released publicly.
See this is the thing with Lou Lamoriello. It’s very tough to tell what his plan is and it’s very rare that someone is able to find information out before it happens. So maybe it is Lou’s way of saying that they’ve agreed on a contract.
We know that Barzal’s agent and Lou have been in close contact, and the rumor was that Barzal was looking for a six-year contract while the Isles wanted to go with a bridge route. It’s completely understandable why they would in a COVID economy as opposed to locking him in long-term.
At this point, I’d be stunned if Barzal’s camp got a long-term extension from Lou Lamoriello. When it’s all said and done more likely than not it will be a two or a three year deal with a $7 million AAV for Barzal.
So everyone please take a page out of Aaron Rodgers playbook and r-e-l-a-x. Relax, it was going to get done and if this isn’t the unofficially official way of saying Barzal is signed, then the news should be coming in the next few days.
