The New York Islanders have just signed Veteran Free Agent Goaltender Cory Schneider. Here’s all you need to know about the deal.

This offseason, the New York Islanders have lost two of their goalies from last season on the free-agent market. Thomas Greiss signed a two-year deal with the Red Wings and Christopher Gibson signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning for one year. Gibson was the starting goalie for the Sound Tigers in the 2019-2020 season.

Now that the Islanders are down a couple of men in the goaltending department, it was apparent the Islanders were in the market for a netminder. Many fans were suggesting the Isles would go after a younger established AHL goalie, but that is far from the case.

The Islanders settled on a familiar name in Cory Schneider. Lou Lamoriello confirmed that the Islanders may have signed Schneider, but throughout camp, the parties could not get a deal done.

Just now, the Islanders have officially announced they have signed thirty-four-year-old and 12 year NHL veteran, Cory Schneider to a one-year deal for $700,000

Done Deal

TSN originally announced this deal on October 12th and it has been on their free agency tracker. According to CapFriendly, the paperwork was officially filed today.

Schneider has played for the New Jersey Devils for the past seven seasons. Originally he started his career with the Vancouver Canucks, where he won the Jennings Trophy in the 2010-2011 season. He was then traded to New Jersey in the 2013 offseason for the Devil’s first-round pick.

Among active goalies, Schneider is top ten in both save percentage (.918) and goals-against average (2.43). The Isles already have both Semyon Varlamov and Ilya Sorokin on their roster for this season, so it will be interesting to see where Schneider fits into the Isles’ plans.

There is a good chance we will see Schneider go directly to the Islanders taxi squad, which will then allow Jakub Skarek to get re-assigned to the Sound Tigers to share the crease with recently signed goalie Francs Marotte.
