Lock games down in the third period

The most pressing resolution for 2025 is staying focused while playing with the lead. So far this season, the New York Islanders have blown seven third-period leads. Only the San Jose Sharks have blown more late leads.

When looking back at those blown leads, we’re talking about 14 points left on the table. While a couple of those games resulted in loser points, the fact is that the Isles could easily be pushing the Carolina Hurricanes for third place in the division.

However, the Islanders are treading water, trailing the Philadelphia Flyers and Columbus Blue Jackets in the standings. While the Isles are within striking distance of the Pittsburgh Penguins for fourth place in the Metro, the situation could be much different.

Moving forward, if the Isles can slash those blown third-period leads, they could easily climb back into the playoff conversation in the Eastern Conference.

As it stands, the Islanders are five points back of the Ottawa Senators for the second wildcard spot in the East. Sure, that’s a relatively big difference to make up. Nevertheless, a solid winning streak can put the Isles back into the playoff conversation.

But making that happen involves playing consistent hockey, improving on special teams, and locking games down in the third period.

While the task won’t be easy, it’s certainly doable. The Isles are finally healthy and have a savvy coach in Patrick Roy. Unless GM Lou Lamoriello throws in the towel this year, the Isles can march into the playoffs much like the way they did last season.

It’s worth keeping in mind that a hot team heading into a postseason, regardless of their regular-season position, can become a dangerous force. Fans hope the Isles can become that dangerous team that makes a strong run by getting hot at the right time.
