The NY Islanders have been the talk of the hockey world today, owning the first overall pick and now trading Noah Dobson to the Montreal Canadiens for picks No. 16 and 17, along with Emil Heineman.

Heineman, 23, is a big body winger, measuring 6’2” and weighing 200 lbs. He spent all of last year playing for the Canadiens, totaling 18 points (10 G, 16 A), while averaging 11:24 of ice-time.

A look into Emil Heineman

Selected 43rd overall in 2020 by the Florida Panthers, this isn’t the first time Heineman has been part of a blockbuster deal. In fact, it isn’t even his second. The Swedish winger was part of the deals that saw Sam Bennett traded from the Calgary Flames to the Panthers, and was also included in the trade that sent Tyler Toffoli from Montreal to Calgary.

When drafted in 2020, Heineman was one of the biggest risers through the draft rankings process, moving up from a fourth-round projection to a second-round round.

One of Heineman’s greatest assets is his speed, complementing his size. This year, Heineman logged 139 speed bursts of 20+ mph, ranking him in the 82nd percentile according to NHL Edge, despite missing 20 games and playing limited minutes.

Heineman is capable of playing on the wing pretty much anywhere in the lineup, giving Patrick Roy some flexibility in his lineup each night.

The Isles do need to re-sign Heineman as he is an RFA.

Heineman also appears to have a great sense of humor. When the Habs visited Salt Lake City in January to play the then Utah Hockey Club for the first time, Heineman was hit by a car while crossing the road, causing him to miss over a month of action.

According to former teammate Michael Pezzetta, the team found out about the incident in a group chat, with Heineman starting the conversation with, “I’ve got a funny story for you guys.”

Hopefully, Heineman learned his lesson and will have better luck crossing Hempstead Turnpike and take his development to another level this season with the Islanders.
