The bitter cross-town rivals don’t often make trades with one another, but the NY Islanders and NY Rangers pulled off the biggest deal in 53 years when the Isles acquired Carson Soucy for a 3rd-round pick.
With the Islanders battling the injury bug along the blueline, the addition of Soucy was to shore up the defense in a push towards the playoffs.Â
Soucy remains without a contract
"Carson Soucy is a big presence, kills penalties," Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche said following the trade. "He's got experience in the NHL. He's a player who can play physical. And you see this year in New York, like he actually played pretty well for the Rangers. He's one of the few Ds in the pluses over there. So again, we're bringing some experience in the NHL to help us."

Soucy played 30 games with the Islanders, scoring twice, including one in his first game, which happened to be against the Rangers.
A few weeks before training camp begins, Soucy is still without a contract for the 2026-27 season. While most teams likely know what their defensive units will look like at this time, Soucy could be an addition if a player goes down to injury, or, could head to camp on a PTO. A reason Chris Drury was willing to deal Soucy to the Islanders was his desire to stay in the NYC area. Perhaps one team he could catch on with could be the third team in the area, the NJ Devils.
Soucy may be on the back nine of his career, but he can still provide leadership and experience, whether that’s as an everyday player or a seventh defenseman.
