It was worth the price of admission—a high price for those in attendance at UBS Arena on Long Island—as Alexander Ovechkin scored his 895th NHL goal, passing Wayne Gretzky and now standing alone as the greatest goal scorer in the league's history.
The goal came on the power-play, at 7:26 of the second period, at the location where so many of his 894 previous had, near the face-off circle as he loaded up a pass from Tom Wilson and lasered a shot past New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin for the history-making moment. Dylan Strome picked up the secondary assist on the record-breaker. Ovechkin celebrated by diving toward center-ice where his teammates poured off the bench to congratulate him.

The game was paused for several minutes as the NHL held an on-ice celebration for the milestone moment. A blue carpet was rolled out to center ice as commissioner Gary Bettman congratulated Ovechkin and presented him with customized artwork. The mic was handed over to Gretzky, who brought smiles to the Islanders fans by saying, "It’s nice not to be at the Nassau Coliseum because I lost a lot of games there," he joked.
Ovechkin then addressed his family, friends, teammates and the fans in attendance. He also added, "Ilya Sorokin, thank you for letting me score 895. I love you brother.”
It was a spectacular moment for the game of hockey, perfectly executed by the league and an unforgettable moment for all those that were in attendance. From the season-ticket holders that held on to their tickets, to the Islanders and Caps fans that paid big prices for a chance to witness history and get to go home saying they were part of it.
