Actions and comments before and after the New York Islanders' disappointing 6-3 loss to the Florida Panthers on Saturday night left fans wondering whether something is straining the relationship between head coach Patrick Roy and GM Lou Lamoriello.
Ahead of the game, Lamoriello addressed the media to announce a series of transactions after the team moved Anthony Duclair to LTIR. Liam Foudy, who had skated in the previous two games, was loaned to Bridgeport. Pierre Engvall and Hudson Fasching were back up on Long Island. Perhaps most surprisingly, Matt Martin was signed to a one-year contract off his PTO, as Lamoriello cited his physicality on the ice, presence around the team, and leadership in the room.
While Lamoriello explained each roster move, Roy wasn't made available to the media before the game, which is a violation of NHL rules. This was unusual enough for several of the team's beat reporters to post about their denied requests to speak to the Isles head coach on social media.
Plenty of storylines emerged from Saturday's loss to the defending Stanley Cup champions. However, it was Roy's subtle comments that grabbed the most attention. When asked about the new additions to the lineup during the post-game press conference, he answered in a way that left fans wondering if he was fully on board with the decisions.
"Having Marty back in the lineup, he brings leadership experience and that physicality that we feel, and Lou thinks is important for us," Roy said. "And Pierre, we know what he did for this team in the past two years, and Lou thought it was a good moment for him to be back and play."
The phrasing left an impression that these were moves he didn't necessarily agree with, and now the head coach must operate with a roster that isn't entirely his choosing. Roy respects Lamoriello, and vice versa, but how things transpired on Saturday raises concerns about their working relationship moving forward and whether their vision for the roster is fully aligned.
Was Roy not made available because he disagreed with the roster decisions? Did he phrase his responses intentionally to distance himself from the decisions? Perhaps fans are looking into something that isn't there or it will remain something worth watching moving forward.
