Brent Sutter became the 16th individual inducted into the New York Islanders Hall-of-Fame on Saturday night and the first since the team moved into UBS Arena during a pre-game ceremony before the team's 4-1 win over the San Jose Sharks.
Sutter revealed his plaque engraved with "The Ultimate Two-Way Center" in the arena corridor before the on-ice ceremonies emceed by Jiggs McDonald and featured HOF alums Bob Nystrom, Bryan Trottier, Kenny Jonsson, Ed Westfall, John Tonnelli, Ken Morrow, and Patrick Flatley. Morrow presented Sutter with a new, customized Islanders HOF blazer and a Tony Capparelli painting. Brent's older brother Duane, a four-time Stanley Cup champion, was also in attendance.
Two original season ticket holders from 1972 were tasked with unveiling Sutter's name in the new Islanders' Ring of Honor above Section 204, the latest addition to the fourth-year arena that continues to expand how it captures Islanders history throughout the venue.
Since Sutter was officially in the Hall-of-Fame, the players must have felt it was okay to pass him on two all-time lists. Brock Nelson scored his 288th career goal in the second period to give the Isles a 2-1 lead and passed both Sutter and Pat LaFontaine to move into fifth all-time in goals scored. Sutter had held the position since he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1991. βIβve been fortunate to be here for a while and played with a lot of great players,β Nelson said after the game. βSimilar message that Brent had, the memories you make with the guys is the best thing."
Meanwhile, Mathew Barzal picked up his 324h assist on Noah Dobson's goal late in the second period to pass Sutter and move into ninth place on that list. βIt was a very special night for Brent, but at the end, a lot of our guys passed him,β said Patrick Roy jokingly during the post-game.
βSorry, Brent.β
