The Bridgeport Islanders entered the Calder Cup Playoffs riding a wave of momentum, but that surge came to a halt Tuesday night, and now the team may have played its final game in the city.

Bridgeport was shut out 2-0 by the Hershey Bears in Game 1 of their best-of-three Atlantic Division play-in series at Total Mortgage Arena, putting their season on the brink of elimination. Many Islanders fans made the trip from Long Island, while others streamed the game on Amazon Prime. I nice treat for the playoff-craving fanbase.

Despite carrying a 10-game home winning streak into the postseason, the Islanders couldn’t find a way past Hershey’s defense and goaltending in a tightly played, low-event contest.

Bridgeport had its chances early. The Islanders spent six minutes on the power play in the opening period but failed to capitalize, as the game remained scoreless through 20 minutes. The defensive tone continued into the second, with both teams limiting high-quality chances. Bridgeport also successfully killed off Hershey’s first power play, sending the game to the third period still tied 0-0 — the first time all season the Islanders had been scoreless through two periods.

The deadlock finally broke late.

With just under eight minutes remaining in regulation, Henrik Rybinski set up David Gucciardi on a backdoor play, and the Hershey defenseman converted to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Bridgeport pushed for an equalizer but couldn’t solve Hershey down the stretch. Ilya Protas sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final second.

It was a frustrating outcome for a Bridgeport team that had built its identity on relentless pressure and timely scoring late in the regular season. On this night, the opportunities were there — especially early — but the finish wasn’t.

Now, the Islanders face a must-win situation.

Game 2 shifts to Hershey on Thursday night, where Bridgeport will need a response to keep its season alive. A loss would end their playoff run, while a win would force a decisive Game 3 back in Bridgeport.
