It's less than 24 hours since the NY Islanders traded Brock Nelson to the Colorado Avalanche, but Nelson is already getting used to his new digs in the Rocky Mountains.

Hitting the ice for the first time in his NHL career in anything other than blue and orange, Nelson was present at Avs practice today, and will wear No. 11 going forward as his usual No. 29 is already taken by Nathan MacKinnon.

Leaving the only home and organization he's known as a professional hockey player, it has been a whirlwind of a day for Nelson, but he looks forward to the opportunity to play for the Avalanche and compete for a Stanley Cup.

Brock Nelson speaks with Denver media for first time since trade

"It's nice to just get out there and get on the ice and play, and get after it" Nelson said after his first meeting with the Denver media. "Get familiar with some of the guys, try to get familiar with everyone here - the staff and the facilities. Trying to get ready for tomorrow. Lots of emotions in travelling in today, but nice to go out there and just play."

One player who Nelson has some familiarity within the organization is Devon Toews, who Nelson played two seasons with on Long Island before Toews was traded to Colorado for two second-picks after the 2019-20 season.

"I talked a little bit with Taser (Toews) once i found out and tiold him I'm excited to be here," Nelson said. "This is obviously an electric team, high octane, that has a chance to win it and they're making a run at it. I'm happy to be a part that they thought would be a good fit to try and help."

Nelson centered the Avs second line at practice today, flanked by Jonathan Droiun and Valeri Nichushkin. He'll suit up for game 902 of his career tomorrow against the Toronto Maple Leafs and his first as a member of the Avalanche.
