Brock Nelson scored just 2:03 into overtime as the New York Islanders rallied to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Saturday night at UBS Arena.

Alexander Romanov and Anders Lee also found the back of the net for the Islanders, who extended their season-high winning streak to four games and notched their seventh victory in the last nine contests. Marcus Hogberg made 24 saves before injuring his hand late in regulation, paving the way for Ilya Sorokin to enter and stop the lone shot he faced in overtime to secure the win.

Carolina’s Jack Roslovic and Sebastian Aho struck early in the first period, scoring just 1:12 apart to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead. Roslovic tallied his 18th goal at 5:18, followed by Aho’s 16th shortly after. Romanov responded for the Islanders, cutting the deficit with his first goal of the season with just over two minutes remaining in the opening period. Lee then tied the game at 6:26 of the third with his 21st goal, setting the stage for Nelson’s overtime heroics.

The game also featured notable debuts for both teams. Tony DeAngelo played his first game with the Islanders after signing a deal on Friday, while Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall suited up for the Hurricanes following a blockbuster trade with Colorado that sent Martin Necas and Jack Drury to the Avalanche. Defenseman Ryan Pulock exited the game seconds into the first period with an upper-body injury and did not return.

The win snapped Carolina’s four-game winning streak and solidified the Islanders’ momentum as they continue to climb the standings. The Isles trail Columbus by six points for the second Wild Card and will wrap up their seven-game homestand on Tuesday night against the Avalanche.
