Edmonton Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl is one of the best players in the world, the NHL's leading goal scorer, and the favorite to win the Hart Trophy. He's having an incredible season and doing incredible things - one came in Friday night's 2-1 win against the New York Islanders.
Draisaitl extended his point streak to 17 games with a 2nd period goal and then scored the game-winner at 3:53 of overtime for his 49th goal of the season. In doing so, he became only the third player in NHL history, and first ever for a Western Conference team, to score two overtime goals against the Islanders in a single season.
According to MSG Networks' Eric Hornick, Draisaitl became just the third player to score two overtime goals against the Islanders in a single season, joining Alex Ovechkin (2008-09) and Adam Graves (1998-99). However, what sets Draisaitl apart is that the Oilers only face the Islanders twice a year, whereas Ovechkin’s Capitals and Graves’ Rangers had multiple matchups against the Isles in their respective seasons.

The 17-game point streak is the longest of Draisaitl's career, and his second goal gave him 100 points on the season. “It’s a nice individual milestone, but the two points are much ," Draisaitl said. "... These are all nice efforts and accomplishments for your personal self, but none of this ever works without your teammates.”
His first OT against the Oilers was at Rogers Place on Nov. 12, 2024. In a game, the Isles rallied from behind with two Anders Lee goals in the third period to force the extra session. Connor McDavid assisted on both of Draisaitl's goals that night, one of three he had, which left him one shy of 1,000.
The Isles aren't the only team that have been on the short-side of Draiaitl's OT prowess; he now has five OT winners on the year - tying an NHL record.
