The pre-season is in the books, and New York Islanders forward Emil Heineman showed fans on Long Island and his new teammates what he's capable of doing this season. The 23-year-old forward, acquired in the trade that sent Noah Dobson to Montreal, said he’s settling into his new surroundings and gaining confidence with every skate.
“Day by day, it’s been step by step,” Heineman said. “It’s a good feeling moving into the start here, and I’m excited. For me, I’m just trying to have a complete game. Trying to be useful all over the ice and when the time comes, I would like to be able to put the puck in the net. So I think it’s, for me, I just want to be as helpful as possible. Of course I like to shoot: it’s fun.”
Known for his quick release and strength on pucks, Heineman has shown flashes of his offensive instincts throughout camp, whether it’s finding soft spots in the zone or getting pucks off his stick in tight areas. Adjusting to the Islanders’ system has been a challenge, but one he’s welcomed as part of his growth.
The team, meanwhile, is focused on sharpening its offensive identity before Opening Night. “I think we play well defensively, but offensively I think we have to get more on the inside,” Heineman said. “We need to get in the goalie’s face and try to get those dirty goals.”
Teammates are already taking notice. “He can play anywhere with anyone,” Anthony Duclair said after Thursday's 4-3 win in Philadelphia. “He’s a horse. He’s so strong on pucks, he’s got a hell of a shot. He’s making the most out of his opportunity here. We’re lucky to have him. He’s gonna be a huge part for us. He’s really good defensively as well. Really smart player.”
Heineman’s integration into the group has been helped by getting practice reps with Bo Horvat and Jonathan Drouin, a potential top-line look. The opportunity, even in practice, reflects the organization’s belief that his skill set could translate into meaningful contributions.
“I’m looking forward to just getting out there, getting to know the fans and playing in front of them,” Heineman said of his anticipated debut at UBS Arena on Oct. 11.
