For Matthew Schaefer, a historic rookie season wasn’t just about goals, records, or milestones — it was about family.

Through every highlight and every breakthrough moment with the New York Islanders, Schaefer carried something far deeper with him. Behind the goals and the growing spotlight was a constant presence — the memory of his late mother, Jennifer, who remained at the center of it all.

“I wish my mom could be here too,” Schaefer said. “I’d love to see her reaction with the fans… I wish she could be at the games, and I could give her a big hug after.”

Even as he delivered one of the most remarkable rookie seasons in recent NHL history, Schaefer never lost sight of where it all started. He spoke openly about the role his mother played in shaping not just his career, but his life.

“She was the backbone of our family… the strongest person in our family, and the boss, for sure,” he said. “She’s someone that you always think about and will never get off your mind.”

That foundation carried him through the grind of an 82-game season — something few 18-year-olds are prepared for, let alone thrive in. But Schaefer didn’t go through it alone.

“I don’t think I would have been able to do this year without my brother and dad, but especially my mom,” he said.

In many ways, every milestone felt shared. Every record tied or broken wasn’t just a personal achievement — it was part of a larger story rooted in the people who helped him get there.

It’s easy to look at Schaefer’s season through a statistical lens — the goals, the points, the accolades. But behind it all is something more meaningful: resilience, perspective, and purpose.

Now, as he turns his focus to Year 2, Schaefer plans to step away briefly — a chance to reset after a whirlwind debut.

But one thing won’t change.

Every step forward will still carry the same motivation — and the same presence — that defined his first.
