Icethetics spots strange contradiction in NY Islanders jersey design contest rules

The New York Islanders’ fan-designed third jersey contest has ended, but a recent Icethetics video highlighted an unusual wrinkle in the fine print governing the winning design.

The navy lighthouse concept defeated a navy “Islanders” wordmark in the final round and is expected to serve as the basis for the team’s third jersey in 2027-28. Icethetics noted that the vote was extremely close, with the Islanders saying only 0.2% separated the two concepts entering the final 24 hours. The lighthouse ultimately prevailed, putting the logo on track to appear as a primary crest for the first time in franchise history.

The video then turned to the contest’s legal language.

According to the rules, the Islanders “shall have no obligation to manufacture, distribute or otherwise commercially exploit the winning design” and also “reserve the right to alter the winning design.”

Icethetics questioned what that could mean for the version that eventually reaches the ice, especially because the organization has already said the concept will be refined with Fanatics before becoming an NHL-ready uniform.

That language appears to conflict with another section of the contest terms, which said the winner would receive tickets to a game at UBS Arena “at which the team will wear a jersey bearing the winning design.”

The difference may ultimately come down to how much the Islanders alter the concept during the production process.

Some changes are expected as part of league approval and full-uniform development, but Icethetics pointed out that the wording leaves the team broad discretion. For now, the lighthouse remains the winning concept.

Exactly how closely the final 2027-28 jersey resembles the fan-submitted version remains to be seen
