If you weren't sucked back into the NY Islanders playoff push, last night likely swayed you onto the bandwagon and away from hoping for a higher draft pick.

Pulling within two points of the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference after an OT win against the Montreal Canadiens last night, Ilya Sorokin stole the show, but not solely for the reason you may think.

Ilya Sorokin set franchise first

Sorokin was phenomenal between the pipes, turning away 38 of 41 shots, and keeping the Isles in the game while being thoroughly outshot.

Aside from doing his typical job, Sorokin also found himself on the score sheet for half of the Islanders goals, recording two assists on the night, including Bo Horvat's OT winner. His multi-point game was the first for an Islanders netminder in the franchise's 53-year history.

"He was definitely the first star of the game," said Head Coach Patrick Roy after the win. "I guess you guys could decide if you give it because of the number of saves he made or the number of points he got."

While Sorokin showed no issue turning pucks aside himself, his Head Coach played his part in giving Sorokin every opportunity to walk away with the win, having a goal overturned due to offsides, but was also unsuccessful on a goaltender interference challenge, which saw Roy quite animated after the goal was upheld.

There were times last night when the Canadiens looked like the much better team, pinning the puck in the Islanders zone for extended periods. But Sorokin's positioning, even on pucks he may not have seen, allowed the Isles to take advantage of their opportunities and walk away with the win.

"When we weren’t as sharp, Ilya was outstanding," Horvat said. "He was definitely the first star of the game. I guess you guys could decide if it was because of the number of saves or the number of points he got."
