In a Reduced Role, Scott Mayfield Would Still Provide the New York Islanders Value

It doesn't matter if it is pre-season, regular season, or playoffs; beating your rival feels good. The New York Islanders were able to defeat the New York Rangers by a score of 4-2 in Madison Square Garden, with a pair of goals by newcomer Matias Maccelli. Many NHL regulars were in the Islanders lineup, including Scott Mayfield, having mixed reviews for his performance.

Mayfield has been the target of fans' dislike for many years, even as he enters his 13th season with the club. The St. Louis native could play in his 700th NHL game this season and has been a solid player for this organization, but like many aging players, his game is deteriorating. In a league full of speed, the 33-year-old is getting slower, and his decision-making is questionable at times.

Having four years left on his contract, Mayfield is affordable for a right-handed defenseman in the NHL market. He makes $3.5 million against the salary cap and would be a welcome depth piece for a contender.

The growing speed in the NHL has ended many careers, especially on the blue line. Mayfield can still kill penalties and brings a physical side that the team lacks overall. Against the Rangers, Mayfield dropped the gloves. Last season, he led the team in penalty minutes with 83.

The defensive depth that Mathieu Darche has built in the system could be pushing Mayfield to the press box. Isaiah George and Kashawn Aitcheson are close to being ready for bigger minutes in the NHL. Aitcheson, specifically, has impressed this camp and overall since being drafted 17th overall in the 2025 draft.

If George or Aitcheson are able to step into the starting role this season, they would be very cheap players who would make a player like Mayfield a good 7th defenseman. Mayfield provides quiet leadership, and his teammates can count on him for protection. The way that Mayfield blocks shots, especially on the penalty kill, is valuable.

A change in the role for Mayfield may help with productive longevity, while allowing the younger players to ease into the NHL.
