Island of Misfit Toys: Evaluating the Brayden Schenn Trade

On March 6th, 2026, the New York Islanders traded for St. Louis centerman and captain Brayden Schenn to bolster their lineup. The trade raised some eyebrows amongst the Islanders’ fandom due to the fact that general manager Mathieu Darche traded for another centerman instead of acquiescing to the persisting rumors that the Islanders were pursuing younger goalscorers from the St. Louis Blues, such as Jordan Kyrou or Robert Thomas. However, Brayden Schenn made a remarkable impact with his presence oozing leadership experience and his ability to produce on both ends of the ice. 

Impact & Performance 

Brayden Schenn is a multi-tooled veteran centerman who produces an insurmountable impact in all three zones. He can defend, score, and provide some playmaking creativity, and he is a physical specimen even at the age of 34. Schenn has, of course, assumed a seat at the special teams table, where he played a role on the primary power play unit. 

After being acquired at the trade deadline, Schenn produced 6 goals and 5 assists for 11 points in 19 games played. Schenn’s contributions in such a limited amount of time with the team exemplified his ability to mesh with new head coach Peter DeBoer's system and his capability to provide stability to a roster that appears to be preparing to undergo a youthful transition.

The second-line center position is one of the most sought-after and scarce positions to fill in the NHL, right alongside a primary right-handed defenseman. The Islanders landing a seemingly perfect transitional second-line center provides the franchise an invaluable resource: time. Schenn has not only demonstrated that he can continue to contribute at his current age, but he has also demonstrated that he can serve as the perfect placeholder while the Islanders prepare to evaluate their plans to find a youthful long-term option for the future of the center position.

Evaluation & Trajectory

The Islanders have Brayden Schenn for two more years, which will make him an unrestricted free agent in 2028. Schenn projects to maintain his role as a middle-six contributor and a guiding presence for up-and-coming prospects as they attempt to break into the lineup. It could be assumed that Schenn will have the chance to tutor rising prospects in Cole Eiserman and Victor Eklund during his stewardship as a middle-six center. 

While Schenn’s cap hit has been repeatedly scrutinized, it could be argued that his cap hit will become less impactful as the salary cap continues to increase. Schenn’s invaluable experience illustrates his value in addition to being a veteran two-way centerman. As a result, compared to the other trades that occurred during Darche’s first playoff run, this trade will most likely be more of an indirect feather in Darche’s cap rather than a mulligan that occurred during the Soucy trade or a necessary evil as displayed by the Palat trade.

As a result, due to the veteran presence of the most recently acquired dynamic two-way centerman, the Brayden Schenn trade will receive a modest B grade.
