Islanders can’t afford to let opportunities go like this

The New York Islanders can't afford to keep letting crucial opportunities to lock up a playoff spot go in their remaining games this season.

The New York Islanders entered Tuesday night’s action with a clear opportunity to secure a playoff spot. All the Isles had to do was beat the Chicago Blackhawks at UBS Arena.

Instead, the Isles fell behind 4-1 after two periods. Yes, the Isles pulled off a valiant comeback effort. But it ultimately came up short. Simon Holmstrom and Calum Ritchie scored in the third, but the club just couldn’t find the equalizer late in the game.

The loss was bad enough. But that wasn’t the worst part. The worst thing in all of this was that the Ottawa Senators edged the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 at Little Caesars Arena. The win gave the Senators 85 points. The Islanders also have 85 points. But because the Senators have played one fewer game, they get the nod for the second wild card spot.

As such, the Islanders are now on the outside-looking-in. And that’s no bueno, considering how tight the Eastern Conference playoff race is getting.

That’s why the Islanders just can’t afford to keep letting opportunities like this slip through their fingers. All the Isles have to do is win, and they’re in. But it seems that’s easier said than done.

Islanders in airtight race for final Eastern Conference playoff spot

So, the Islanders are in an airtight race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Boston Bruins currently hold the first wild card spot. They could have opened up a bigger lead. However, the Bruins lost 4-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the TD Garden, leaving them with 86 points.

The Senators hold the second wild card spot with 85 points. The Red Wings are right behind with 84, and the Philadelphia Flyers are still within striking distance at 80 points.

It’s also worth pointing out that the Metro Division race is far from over. The surprising Columbus Blue Jackets are in second with 87 points, with the Pittsburgh Penguins, who lost big time to the Colorado Avalanche at home, are third with 86 points.

The Blue Jackets barely got past the Flyers, 3-2, giving them a shot to lock up one of the top three seeds in the Metro.

But that’s a tenuous lead at best. The Islanders can easily close the gap by winning their next game against the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.

It may seem simplistic to think all the Isles need is to win. But it’s really that simple. Stringing a decent win streak should be enough to get the Isles into the 2026 NHL playoffs. Going 5-5-0 in their last 10 just won’t cut it.

It’s close enough to where a couple of wins can make all the difference in the world.
