New York Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche announced today that head coach Patrick Roy has been relieved of his duties after nearly two and half seasons.
The Islanders who controlled their playoff destiny are 3-7 in their last 10 games and have lost four straight games amidst the NHL's playoff push. Since March 1st, the Islanders are 8-10.
During Friday night's loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, it appeared many Islanders had tuned out Roy during a 1st period timeout trailing 2-0. The writing was on the wall for Mathieu Darche at that point. A 10 shot effort in Carolina a night later made the decision even easier for the rookie GM.
Further more, Mathieu Darche also announced that former Dallas Stars head coach Pete DeBoer will take over the head coaching position in the meantime. DeBoer, who has made runs to the cup final in 2012 and 2016, is hoping he has some postseason magic ahead with his new club. DeBoer who was relieved of duties from the Stars after a disappointing playoff showing last season, has not coached since then, and has been eager to get an opportunity to get behind an NHL bench again.
The Islanders still sit at 3rd in the Metropolitan Division standings but have played more games than the chasing teams. With four home games remaining the Islanders would have to find some winning luck on home ice to get a chance to play in the postseason in two weeks time.
Pete DeBoer will make his debut as Islanders bench boss Thursday night when the Isles host the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7pm.
With that being said, the Islanders are off for Easter Sunday today, and will have multiple practices in their system under DeBoer before a must win game in Elmont.
Money Puck lists the Islanders with a 31% of making the playoffs.
