Kyle Palmieri finally found the scoresheet, and the New York Islanders got a much-needed offensive boost from one of their veteran forwards.

Palmieri scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in the third period, as the Islanders defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 on Tuesday night at UBS Arena.

After missing most of training camp and the preseason, Palmieri had gone without a point through New York's first five games. That changed Tuesday when he opened the scoring late in the first period and added the winner at 5:38 of the third.

"Felt good to contribute," Palmieri said. "Just been trying to work in my game and make a positive impact with the team and help our team win."

Matias Maccelli also had his best game since joining the Islanders, scoring his first goal with the team and adding an assist. Maccelli, who finished with six shots, began the night on the fourth line before earning shifts alongside Bo Horvat and Palmieri.

The Islanders built a 2-0 lead in the opening period, with Maccelli scoring just 53 seconds after Palmieri. Vancouver responded with second-period goals from Max Sasson and Brock Boeser, whose power-play tally tied the game.

Palmieri restored the Isles' lead early in the third, converting a setup from Maccelli.

Matthew Schaefer continued his impressive start with two assists, giving the rookie defenseman six in six games. Horvat extended his season-opening point streak to six games, while Matt Kessel recorded his first point as an Islander in his season debut.

Ilya Sorokin made 24 saves for his 157th career victory, tying Glenn "Chico" Resch for second in franchise history.

The Islanders improved to 3-3-0, with all three victories coming at UBS Arena. They next take the ice on Thursday night in Ottawa against the Senators.
