As the New York Islanders prepare to open the 2025-26 season, co-owner Jon Ledecky says the organization’s optimism is as high as it’s been in years — and much of that centers on 18-year-old defenseman Matthew Schaefer, the team’s No. 1 overall pick.
“We’re incredibly excited,” Ledecky told Newsday on Monday before unveiling a new playground at the Glen Cove YMCA. “It’s going to mean exciting hockey at UBS Arena."
Ledecky’s enthusiasm goes beyond Schaefer’s on-ice ability. It’s the teenager’s maturity and character that have impressed him most. “He is one of the most mature people I’ve ever met,” Ledecky said. “A friend of mine who got to interact with him said, ‘I just can’t believe this kid is 18 years old. The maturity. The calm confidence. The integrity. His high character. His family background. Everything about him.’ He’s always asking how you’re doing versus how he’s doing. He doesn’t talk about himself. He talks about you and others. And I find that so incredibly refreshing.”
Unlike many first overall picks thrust immediately into rebuilding rosters, Schaefer will begin his NHL journey surrounded by experienced leaders. “It’s a tight locker room,” Ledecky said. “It’s a locker room of leaders. Whether it’s Bo Horvat or Anders Lee or any of the other veterans, they’re providing leadership for the younger guys. That’s super important for the team.”
After years of being one of the league’s older clubs, Ledecky sees balance returning to the Islanders’ roster. “The average age in the NHL is about 25, and we were one of the older teams in the past,” he said. “Now, we’re moving toward a youth movement. I think that’s great.”
