If there’s anyone qualified to recognize elite skill, it’s Mathew Barzal, and the New York Islanders' star didn’t hold back in praising his linemate, Bo Horvat, after Monday’s 3-2 overtime win over the New Jersey Devils.
“I think he might be the best shooter in the world right now,” Barzal said postgame. “That’s not just because he’s getting lucky. His shot is truly world-class. Anytime he’s around the net or has a chance in the slot, it’s got a great chance of going in. None of it’s luck - it’s work.”

Horvat scored for the 12th time this season, extending his point streak to six games (6-3-9) and recording his 300th assist. His confidence and consistency have changed the tone for an Islanders team that’s now finding its stride. The chemistry between Barzal and Horvat, along with Emil Heineman on the wing, continues to grow, and Barzal’s overtime goal was the latest example of the team's best players carrying them.
Horvat tied the game at 1-1 in the second period, taking a pass from Kyle Palmieri and unleashing his world-class shot past Jacob Markström. The resilient win that handed the Devils their first home loss of the season was anchored by 33 saves from Ilya Sorokin and clutch special teams that killed off two late Devils' power plays before Palmieri scored on their lone chance with the man advantage. “That was a character win,” Patrick said about his team’s resiliency after the late tying goal. “Giving a goal with four seconds left and to be able to win the game, I thought it was a great team effort.
Two straight road wins, a dialed-in goaltender, and a red-hot Horvat - the Islanders look like a team rediscovering the form that makes them dangerous. And if Barzal’s right, they’ve got the best shooter in the world leading the way.
