It has been a whirlwind 24 hours for the New York Islanders. After dropping seven of their last ten games, the team announced it was firing head coach Patrick Roy. This alone would have been surprising, as there are only four games left in the season and the Isles sit just a point back of the last playoff spot. But things got even more surprising when it was announced that Peter DeBoer was taking over behind the bench.
This move shows that General Manager Mathieu Darche believes in this group. He feels that the team is good enough to make a run and that Roy was holding the team back. He also believes that DeBoer is the right guy to take this team to that next level. So much so that they gave him a three-year deal, which will expire the same year as Darche's contract. These two are now connected, and Darche better hope that DeBoer works out; otherwise, it could cost him his job, too.
Pete DeBoer’s contract with the Islanders is for the rest of this year + three more seasons, sources told ESPN. That aligns him with GM Mathieu Darche’s contract.

The Peter DeBoer hire could cost Mathieu Darche his job if unsuccessful
This move signals a major shift in the organization's philosophy. As great a season as this has been for the Islanders, there was this feeling that they were ahead of schedule. This was supposed to be a transition year as Darche rebuilt the team and got them ready to contend in two to three years. But with the success they have had this season, the organization has decided to move up the timeline. They are now all in on making the playoffs and going as far as possible.
While fans will like the team's aggressiveness, it's a big risk. Who's to say that the team is just playing over its head and they will come back down to earth next season? We see it all the time: a team has a good season but is unable to turn it into sustained success. What are the Islanders going to do if this is the path they go down? It will be up to DeBoer to ensure that this does not happen and that the Islanders can build off this season.
If not, it will cost not only DeBoer his job but also Darche. With both of there contract ending in three years, it gives the Islanders an opportunity to clean house. A chance to look at the state of the organization and see if the tandem of Darche and DeBoer is right for the future. They will need to find a way to keep this team from being a one-year wonder and help them find sustainable success. It's the only way to keep both employed.
Lucky for Darche, DeBoer does have a ton of success in his career. He has a career record of 662-447-152 and has made the playoffs ten times. This includes making it nine of the last ten seasons he has been a coach. This has also come from multiple different organizations, showing that his coaching style translates to different teams. Sure, he has not won a Stanley Cup, but his consistent playoff appearances are impressive. Because of this, it makes sense why Darche believes in him.
Regardless of how the Islanders finish the season, the front office is taking a major risk here. They have committed to this team being a consistent winner, and failure will cost them their jobs.
