New York Islanders fans can expect one major shift from Mathieu Darche this offseason. In previous offseasons, fans and the media had to contend with former GM Lou Lamoriello’s secretive approach.

It seemed like Lamoriello was protecting the nuclear launch codes, keeping all organizational business very close to the breast. While the point wasn’t to give the team’s moves away, many times fans felt isolated and marginalized by the lack of communication from Lamoriello.

This offseason, Darche has been adamant about maintaining open communication with fans and the media, within reasonable means.

The term “reasonable” means that Darche has provided as much insight as he can without spilling the beans on privileged information. That’s a crucial balance to maintain as defining the line between public and insider information can be challenging.

But Darche has managed to keep that balance thus far

For instance, Darche has signaled that the Islanders plan to keep the number one overall pick without letting the cat out of the bag regarding who the team is going to select.

Another poignant example is how Darche communicated his intentions to retain Patrick Roy as coach without getting into any background details about possible lingering issues.

Darche has proven to be forthcoming and transparent. While that’s not to say that Lamoriello wasn’t, his defensive nature clouded the New York Islanders with an aura of mystery. But it wasn’t the good kind of mystery. It was the kind of mystery that frustrated fans and the media due to the needless degree of hermeticism.

Mathieu Darche’s open approach a relief to New York Islanders fans

Mathieu Darche’s open approach is a relief to Islanders fans. In particular, fans feel like they’re a part of the organization’s decision-making process. Darche has made himself available just enough to reassure fans that the adults are in charge.

That relief is palpable in the way that the organization now seems like it’s poised to turn over a new leaf and usher in a new era of prosperity and growth.

That new era begins with the first-overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Darche has been clear about the Islanders’ intentions with the pick. The Isles have communicated they want to take a cornerstone player, even if Darche doesn’t explicitly say, “This is who we want."

Of course, Darche would be foolish to tip his hand at any point in the game. But there will come a time when fans and the media will become privy to the Islanders’ decision-making process regarding the draft and free agency.

That’s another thing to consider.

Darche has been true to his word by re-signing Adam Boqvist and Kyle Palmieri. Both players had deals in place before Lamoriello departed. Darche honored the deals and re-signing both players.

That move says a lot about Darche’s character. He’s willing to do right by people in hopes of helping the organization grow.

If that ethos continues to permeate the organization, Islanders’ fans could be witnessing an entirely different managerial approach than the one they have grown accustomed to.
