The volcano that is the NHL trade deadline is ready to erupt, as the Olympics are completed and organizations have just six days to determine their final rosrters are they plow into the playoffs.
Darche need to be patient
The standings are taking shape, and GMs are making their final determinations on whether they'll be buyers or sellers at the deadline. With the gap widening in both conferences between playoff teams and those continuing to drop points, Elliotte Friedman revealed on the 32 Thoughts podcast that some executives believe there will be many more sellers than buyers.
"He said unless you have a particular target, you say this is the player I want because you think they're a top line player or he fits your team - he says there's a lot of teams out there with somewhat similar guys, and he thinks that some of these teams are going to be stuck, unable to unload players," Friedman says. "He thinks there are too many sellers and not enough buyers."
What Mathieu Darche has planned for the deadline remains to be seen. He has already added Ondrej Palat and Carson Soucy, so he is clearly in the buyer's market, but how big is he willing to go? There's the chance Darche goes big-game hunting, looking to acquire the likes of a Jordan Kyrou or Robert Thomas. But if a deal can't be reached, he could look to acquire a middle-6 forward, of which there will be lots on the market. Waiting teams out til deadline day on Friday could force GMs to lower their prices or risk being stuck with a player they are looking to unload.
