Matias Maccelli gives NY Islanders an early glimpse of what he can bring

If Matias Maccelli is trying to make the case that he belongs somewhere in the New York Islanders’ top six, last night was a pretty good statement, even if he's keeping expectations in check.

Maccelli scored twice and added an assist in the Islanders’ 4-3 preseason win over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, showing some of the offensive creativity that made him such an intriguing addition in the first place.

It was only preseason. Maccelli knows that better than anyone.

“It’s a good start, but it’s still early,” Maccelli said. “It’s preseason. They’re not playing their full roster. I don’t think we are either.”

Fair enough. Nobody should be handing out lineup spots after one exhibition game.

Still, the Islanders wanted more skill and playmaking in their forward group, and Maccelli gave them a glimpse of exactly that Tuesday night.

He was involved offensively at five-on-five and helped a revamped power play create chances, finishing with three points in his first game action with his new club.

Maccelli said the power play remains very much a work in progress as everyone learns each other’s tendencies. “We made some good plays, couple not so good plays,” he said. “Still trying to figure out how the guys move out there, how they play and what they like.”

The same can probably be said about Maccelli’s place in the lineup.

He isn’t hiding from what he wants. Asked about earning a top-six role, Maccelli called that “the goal,” while adding that he doesn’t want to spend too much time thinking about it.

But two goals and three points at Madison Square Garden? That helps build his case.
