Leaving home and embarking on a new career is a daunting task for anyone, but more so for an 18-year-old. Though Matthew Schaefer has been away from his home in Hamilton, ON, for a few years while playing with the Erie Otters, he’s now in unfamiliar territory on Long Island - a home he’ll hopefully have for over a decade.

Although he’s mature beyond his years, young players in the NHL often look to older players for guidance. In Schaefer’s case, it’s a former player in Matt Martin, who recently took on the role of Special Assistant to the GM with the NY Islanders.

Scahfer spending time with the Martin's

After a video of Schaefer playing with Martin’s daughter recently went viral, the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft has stated that he’s been spending plenty of time around Martin and his family.

“He’s as classy as it gets,” Schaefer said today after the final day of rookie camp. “Whether it’s him inviting me over to dinner, playing with his kids - I mean, it’s probably more fun for me playing with his kids, you know, getting away from everything. Him and his wife are awesome. He took me in right away, and honestly, I call him big brother or another dad. I think I went up and was wrestling him the other day. He still has that like, kid in him, so you go to talk to him and he’s gonna have your back no matter what. Whether it’s through tough times or, want to come over and get a breath of fresh air, or go for a bite to eat. Him and his family are always open to it, and I enjoy it so much.”

Young players in the Islanders system have turned to veterans in earlier years, whether it be John Tavares living with Doug Weight or Mat Barzal with Dennis Seidenberg; it appears Martin is now returning the favor.

Martin and his wife, Sydney, recently welcomed twin boys into the world, making them a family of five, so what’s one more helping hand in Schaefer?
