Every year around the draft, we hear stories about the prospects' meetings with the dozens of teams, as they hope to learn more about the personality and what type of person they are off the ice.

Most of it entails straightforward questions giving General Managers and front offices a deeper look into a player's background, but sometimes a curveball question is thrown in. The Montreal Canadiens are one team that has been notorious for this, giving players wild scenarios that they’d never find themselves in.

Schaefer and Crosby on an island

Matthew Schaefer, the consensus top prospect in this year's draft, told Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas on the 32 Thoughts podcast that he met with about a dozen teams at the combine, and received a few off-the-radar questions, as did some of his close friends also going through the process.

He shared that one of his friends (whom he wouldn’t name) was asked if he were on a deserted island with Sidney Crosby, and the player had a baseball bat and Crosby had the only available bottle of water, what would the player do? Friedman then asked what Schaefer what he would do if he were in that situation.

“Yeah, I’d probably hit him off the head because of the water,” Schaefer responded. “ As much as it’s like ‘Oh, it’s Crosby,’ but no, in that scenario, whoever it is, you’ve got to get the water to live.”

Friedman proceeds to tell Schaefer, “Well, I don’t know how this is going to go, Matthew, but I can guarantee you this answer just sold 10,000 more Islanders Schaefer jerseys.”

Now, anyone who has followed Schaefer leading up to the draft understands how down-to-earth and what a great kid he appears to be, and this exercise was all in good fun. But, Islanders fans are probably glad to hear their potential number one pick is willing to bop Crosby on the head, hypothetical or not.
