The New York Islanders kept the momentum going in the 2025 NHL Draft in the second round by selecting Daniil Prokhorov with the 42nd pick.

Prokhorov is a steal at this slot. The Athletic had the 6’6” Russian at #25 in the first round. It’s surprising to find Prokhorov, the top Russian prospect in the 2025 NHL Draft, sliding all the way to #42.

But that’s the Islanders’ gain.

The towering right winger is described as a “heavy hitter,” “heavy shooter,” and “physical forward” by Elite Prospects. That description sounds precisely like the type of player Patrick Roy likes. The Isles could use a strong, hard-hitting forward with some offensive upside.

NHL Central Scouting had Prokhorov as the #18 European Skater.

Here’s the scouting report on Prokhorov from Elite Prospects:

"Daniil Prokhorov plays the game like he’s trying to leave a mark — literally. There is no player as violent and eager to throw huge hits. He sprints at opponents, seeing red the whole time, and looks to level them. His offence comes from fighting, battling off defenders behind the net to work his way around to the netfront."

He sounds like a solid addition to the power play. Prokhorov scored 20 goals in 43 games with the Dynamo St. Petersburg this past season. He’ll be heading back to the Dynamo this upcoming season. If his development continues on its current path, Prokhorov could be making it to North America in the next couple of seasons.

Given his size and skill set, Prokhorov could be a solid middle-six option, delivering solid physical play and depth scoring.

Prokhorov now adds another strong winger to complement Victor Eklund’s style of play. The Islanders now have two high-end wingers in Prokhorov and Victor Eklund.

While both prospects are likely two to three years away from making an impact at the NHL level, Islanders’ fans can’t help but get excited about the potential elite scoring wingers jumping into the Isles’ lineup.

New York Islanders Trade Grade

Grade: B+

The New York Islanders got a solid, hard-hitting winger at this slot. He could have been a first-rounder. Thus far, Prokhorov looks like a steal at this slot.
