The New York Islanders added a few new faces to the squad this offseason through the draft, trades, and free agency. With the first month of the season coming to a close here’s a lot at how they have performed so far.
Jonathan Drouin- 8 games, 1 goal, 5 assists, 6 points
Drouin was looked at as a surprise move that nobody expected this offseason. He was brought in because of his speed and for his prior experience with powerplay coach Ray Bennett. Drouin has found a home on his line with Bo Horvat and Emil Heineman while adding another playmaker for the Islanders powerplay.
Emil Heineman- 9 games, 5 goals, 1 assist, 6 points
Heineman was the current NHL talent that the blue and orange received from the Montreal Canadiens as well as two first round picks but Heineman has been a pleasant surprise. In his first full season last season Heineman had 10 goals and 8 assists for 18 points in 62 games. He is on pace to crush that this season, but to be fair he’s getting a lot more ice time which has so far benefitted both teams. That trade has looked like a win-win for both teams and Heineman has definitely played better than expected.
Matthew Schaefer- 9 games, 2 goals, 5 assists, 7 points
The No. 1 pick hasn’t disappointed; he has already been the Islanders best defenseman and one of the team’s best players. I believe he’s already one of the best players in the league. Schaefer has already shown why he was the clear No. 1 pick and continues to improve every game. He has played the nine and been noticeable almost every time he touches the ice. He is going to be one of the best players in the league and is already a star on the squad.
Maxim Shabanov- 6 games, 1 goal, 2 assists, 3 points
The undersized forward standing at 5’9 has shown glimpses of having what it takes to be in the NHL. He was the best free agent available from Europe, but I don’t think the Islanders have a proper role for him available at the moment. Shabanov has played mostly on the third line, but his skills make him a top six forward. Shabanov is someone who is still adjusting to the North American ice and I expect him to improve as the season goes on.
David Rittich- 2 games, 2 wins, 2.01 GAA, .940 SV%
Rittich has been great in the games that he has played in. He’s been one of the best goalies in the league so far in little game time. He definitely will take some of the game load off of Ilya Sorokin’s plate and has already contributed early in the season.
