The New York Islanders are promising fans more than just a different look on the ice this season. There are changes coming outside UBS Arena, new delicious (or at least unique) food options inside and plenty of giveaways worth circling on the calendar.
Ahead of Saturday's home opener against the New Jersey Devils, the Islanders unveiled several additions to the game-day experience, beginning with a new location for The Park.
Now called The Park on The Plaza, the popular pregame gathering spot moves to the north side of UBS Arena, outside the American Express Entrance. It will open three and a half hours before puck drop, weather permitting, with food trucks, lawn games, hockey activities and a beer garden offering $5 beers.
One important change to note is that fans can no longer bring their own alcoholic beverages.
Oh well. It was good while it lasted.
Inside the building, the Islanders are getting creative with their concessions. New offerings include a two-foot-long chicken cutlet stromboli, Mister Softee Nachos and, for anyone feeling particularly adventurous, a grilled cheese sandwich featuring brie and Nerds Gummy Clusters.
Long Island's Tap Room will also become the first featured restaurant at the new Coca-Cola Corner, which will rotate local dining options throughout the season.
Is it the Nassau Coliseum parking lot tailgate? No, but all of this is pretty cool.
As previously announced, Saturday's home opener features a T-shirt giveaway for every fan. Ilya Sorokin and Matthew Schaefer bobblehead nights are scheduled for Nov. 27 and Feb. 13, respectively.
The team also announced on Thursday that the Islanders will unveil their Hometown Remix jersey in November and wear the new design for 10 home games celebrating different elements of Long Island culture.
And then there's the biggest event on the calendar. UBS Arena will host NHL All-Star Weekend on Feb. 5-6, bringing the league's showcase event back to Long Island.
