A member of the New York Islanders front office continues to surface in executive circles.

Assistant GM and Director of Player Development, Ryan Bowness, is believed to have completed a second interview with the Vancouver Canucks this weekend as the organization narrows its search for a new hockey operations leader. Bowness had also been part of the mix for the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager role, but that position was filled Sunday when Toronto named John Chayka as GM and brought in Mats Sundin as senior executive adviser, hockey operations.

The Maple Leafs’ decision removes one potential landing spot, but Bowness’ continued involvement in Vancouver’s process suggests he remains under consideration elsewhere. According to reports, the Canucks are entering the later stages of their search, with additional interviews expected before a final decision.

The son of Columbus and former Isles head coach Rick Bowness, the 42-year-old has built a steady résumé across several organizations. He began his career with the Atlanta Thrashers and stayed with the franchise through its transition to the Winnipeg Jets. His experience expanded in pro scouting roles with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he eventually led the department, before moving into management positions with the Ottawa Senators.

He later joined the Islanders under GM Mathieu Darche, becoming part of a relatively new front office group still establishing its long-term direction. While league interest in Bowness may reflect his individual track record, it also comes at a time when teams are increasingly willing to explore a mix of experienced and first-time executive candidates.

With Toronto now off the board, attention shifts to Vancouver and whether Bowness remains in serious contention. For now, his candidacy highlights both his career progression and the ongoing churn of NHL front offices during a busy hiring cycle.

Darche and the Islanders may be soon holding their own executiev search, for a replacement.
