It was a milestone moment — and a tug-of-war over the puck that followed.
Victor Eklund recorded his first NHL point Tuesday night, picking up a secondary assist on Bo Horvat’s 300th career goal in the Islanders’ season finale. But when it came time to decide who kept the puck, neither player wanted it for themselves.
The 19-year-old rookie made a poised cross-crease pass that led to the goal, setting up Mathew Barzal before Horvat buried the finish to tie the game in the second period. Horvat immediately retrieved the puck — not for his milestone, but for Eklund. “You’ll never forget your first NHL game, let alone your first NHL point,” Horvat said. “He’s gotta have that.”

Despite joining an exclusive group of NHL players to reach 300 career goals, Horvat made it clear the night belonged to the rookie.
Eklund, however, saw it differently.
“I told him he should keep it,” Eklund said. “300 goals is just amazing… not a lot of people can do that.” The exchange perfectly captured the respect between veteran and newcomer — one acknowledging the significance of a first NHL point, the other recognizing the rarity of a 300-goal milestone. Eklund impressed in his debut, logging over 15 minutes of ice time with two shots and two hits, while skating alongside Horvat and Simon Holmstrom.
“I had the best time of my life,” Eklund said. “So much fun.”
In a season-ending loss, the Islanders still found a memorable moment — one puck, two milestones, and a glimpse of the team’s future.
