The New York Islanders announced they have re-signed defenseman Ethan Bear, ensuring that one of the organization's most experienced blueliners remains in the fold as the franchise transitions its AHL affiliate to Hamilton.

While Bear's return may not generate the same headlines as a blockbuster trade or free-agent signing, it could prove to be an important move for both the Islanders and the new Hamilton Hammers.

Last season, Bear quietly became one of Bridgeport's most productive defensemen. Despite appearing in just 40 games, he recorded four goals and 23 assists for 27 points, leading all Bridgeport defensemen in points per game.

His value goes beyond offense.

At 28 years old, Bear brings something few players in the Islanders' development system possess: extensive NHL experience. The former fifth-round pick has appeared in 275 NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes, Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals.

For a Hamilton roster expected to feature several of the Islanders' top prospects, having a veteran defenseman who has navigated both the NHL and AHL can be invaluable.

And let's not forget, Bear was one of the AHL's best defensemen just two seasons ago.

During the 2024-25 campaign with the Hershey Bears, he posted 46 points in 62 games, earned an AHL All-Star selection and was named to the league's Second All-Star Team.

The talent has never been in question.

Now Bear gets another opportunity to continue rebuilding his NHL stock while helping mentor the next wave of Islanders prospects.

Whether he ultimately earns another NHL opportunity remains to be seen. But as the Islanders begin a new chapter in Hamilton, bringing back an experienced player with nearly 300 NHL games under his belt feels like a smart piece of business.
