For a kid who grew up on Long Island dreaming about wearing an Islanders jersey, the journey is continuing for at least one more season.

The New York Islanders announced that defenseman Marshall Warren has signed a one-year, two-way contract, ensuring that one of the organization's most intriguing homegrown stories remains in the fold.

Warren's path to professional hockey has never been the most talked about in the Islanders system, but he quietly took a major step forward last season.

The Laurel Hollow native finally made his NHL debut, appearing in eight games and recording three assists. While the sample size was small, Warren looked comfortable at the highest level and showed flashes of the puck-moving ability that has helped him climb the organizational ladder.

His biggest impact, however, came with the AHL club.

In 56 games, Warren posted six goals and 26 assists for 32 points, leading all Bridgeport defensemen in scoring and finishing second on the team in assists. For a player once viewed primarily as a steady two-way defenseman, the offensive growth was an encouraging development.

Now the question becomes what comes next.

The Islanders' blue line is becoming increasingly crowded, especially with the emergence of Matthew Schaefer and several young defensemen pushing for opportunities. But Warren has done exactly what organizations want from depth prospects: improve every season and make management think twice before looking elsewhere.

There is also something unique about his story.

Long Island natives rarely get the opportunity to play meaningful games for their hometown team. Warren not only reached that goal, but he now enters training camp with legitimate NHL experience and a chance to compete for additional call-ups throughout the season.

At 25 years old, this feels like a pivotal year.

Whether Warren ultimately becomes a full-time NHL player remains to be seen. But after leading Bridgeport defensemen in scoring and earning his first taste of the NHL, he has certainly earned another opportunity.

For the Islanders, bringing back a local product who continues to trend upward feels like an easy decision.
