The New York Islanders made another move to bolster their defense, claiming D Adam Boqvist off waivers. It's the third offensive-minded defenseman the Isles have added in less than a week after signing Tony DeAngelo and acquiring Scott Perunovich from the St. Louis Blues. In a corresponding move, 20-year-old Isaiah George, who has struggled recently, was sent to Bridgeport.

The 24-year-old defenseman, most recently with the Florida Panthers, now joins an Islanders team looking to strengthen its blue line any way they can after losing Noah Dobson and Ryan Pulock for extended periods. Boqvist, a former first-round pick (eighth overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2018, brings offensive upside and puck-moving ability to the Islanders’ defensive corps.

Known for his skating and playmaking, Boqvist has shown flashes of top-four potential in his young career. However, injuries and inconsistent play have limited his impact since being drafted. He was destined for the AHL before the Isles claimed him from Florida. In 18 games this season, he has two goals and six points while averaging less than 13 minutes TOI. He is playing on a 1 year, $775k AAV and is a restricted free agent (RFA) this off-season.

For the Islanders, this move represents a low-risk, high-reward acquisition. With Noah Dobson out of the lineup, adding another mobile defenseman like Boqvist provides even more reinforcements for their bolstered blueline. If he can stay healthy and find consistency in his game, he has the potential to be a valuable piece this season.

It remains to be seen how head coach Patrick Roy will utilize Boqvist. He could slot into a bottom-pairing role to start or see time on the second power-play unit. The Islanders have been looking for more offensive contributions from their defense, and Boqvist’s skill set fits that need.

With this waiver claim, the Islanders are signaling that they’re serious about making roster improvements down the stretch. If Boqvist can tap into his potential and adjust quickly to his new team, he could become an important contributor as the Islanders continue their playoff push.
