The stakes are always high when the NY Islanders and NY Rangers take the ice. In this case, they may not be at their highest, but alumni from the two organizations came together for a great cause at Madison Square Garden.
With the entire lower bowl sold out at MSG, all proceeds from the game that saw the Islanders get the best of their in-state rivals, 4-2, went to the Garden of Dreams Foundation and the Northwell Health Foundation.
Though not technically retired just yet, the Islanders brought in their secret weapon, Cal Clutterbuck. Clutter opened the scoring, lifting former teammate Derick Brassard's stick, taking the puck, and beating Hall of Fame netminder Henrik Lundqvist's glove side.
Islanders alumni take down the Rangers alumni
The Rangers scored the next two on goals from Ryan Callahan and Bryan Boyle, who finally figured out how to beat recently retired goaltender Kevin Poulin.
In a game that hasn't seen many penalties over the last few years, four infractions were called today, and the Islanders alumni might be able to give a pointer or two to the current team. At 55 years old, Pierre Turgeon still has the wheels and bounced one off Lundqvist's pads to Clutterbuck who knotted the game at two for his second of the game.
Just a few minutes later, Clutterbuck deflected home a puck off the stick of Radek Martinek to give the Isles the lead again. It was his third of the night to complete the hat-trick, something he never accomplished during his career.
With the goalie pulled, Eric Cairns sent one the length of the ice to seal the game for the Isles.
