For New York Islanders prospect Isaiah George, this week’s rookie camp has been about more than just drills and scrimmages — it’s about showing how much his game has grown since getting a taste of the NHL last season. The young forward, who appeared in games with the Islanders in 2024-25, is eager to build on that experience and push for a bigger role.
“Yeah, it was really fun,” George said after Day 3 of rookie camp. “It was the first time I got to play like some type of game situation [at camp]. So, it was really fun to just compete, score some goals, battle, so it was really good.”
With a smaller group at rookie camp compared to July’s development camp, George has been relishing the extra ice time. “Obviously, like less guys, too. So, you get more reps, you get going more and more right after each other. It’s been really good. I feel like it’s preparing us well going into main camp and just really getting the engines going here,” he said.
The forward noted he spent the summer working on all aspects of his game, especially his skating and playmaking, areas he knows are critical if he wants to stick at the NHL level. “I felt like I took a big step last year and I just want to keep building on that,” George said.
Coaches have stressed pace and situational play, particularly on the defensive side. “From a defensive perspective, I feel like they’re really harping on the D getting up in transition and then being good on those two-on-ones defensively. Making sure you’re pushing them outside and taking away that,” George explained.
Armed with confidence from his NHL debut and a sharp focus in camp, George looks ready to seize his next opportunity.
